Tablet or Laptop for a Senior: How to Choose?

Tablet or laptop for a senior? Advantages, disadvantages and decision tree to make the right choice in 2026.

Tablet or Laptop for a Senior: How to Choose?

Tablet or Laptop for a Senior: How to Choose?

It is the question millions of families ask every year: should you give a tablet or a laptop to an ageing parent or grandparent? The answer is not the same for everyone. This guide helps you decide based on real needs, level of digital comfort and budget.

According to the Credoc digital barometer (2025), 52% of French people over 70 use a tablet at least once a week, compared with 67% who use a computer. But among new senior users (those who first equipped themselves after the age of 65), a tablet is adopted twice as fast as a PC.

The advantages of a tablet for a senior

1. Ease of use

The touchscreen interface is natural: you touch what you want to open, swipe to scroll, pinch to zoom. No need to master double-clicking, right-clicking or drag and drop with a mouse. According to a France Silver Eco study (2025), seniors who have never used a computer take on average 2 to 3 days to feel comfortable with a tablet, compared with 1 to 2 weeks for a PC.

2. Weight and portability

A 10-inch tablet weighs between 400 and 600 grams. A laptop, even a light one, exceeds 1.3 kg. For a person who moves between the armchair, the bed and the terrace, this difference is significant. A tablet can be held in one hand, rested on the lap and slipped into a handbag.

3. Battery life

Tablets offer 8 to 12 hours of battery life in everyday use (source: LesNumeriques tests, 2025-2026). Entry-level laptops last around 5 to 8 hours. With a tablet, you can forget the charger for the entire day.

4. Video calls

This is often the main use for seniors. Tablets excel in this area: the front camera is well positioned, the screen is large enough to see faces, and video call applications (FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype) are simple to use. On iPad, FaceTime works with a single touch.

5. Instant start-up

A tablet turns on in 2 to 3 seconds. No loading bar, no Windows password prompt, no update blocking the screen. You press the button and it is ready.

The advantages of a laptop for a senior

1. The physical keyboard

For writing emails, drafting a letter or filling in an administrative form, nothing replaces a real keyboard. The keys are large, well spaced and offer reassuring tactile feedback. On a tablet, the virtual keyboard takes up half the screen and typing is slower and more prone to errors.

2. Screen size

A 15.6-inch laptop offers a display area almost twice that of a 10-inch tablet. For reading the news online, consulting a bank statement or displaying an administrative document, the visual comfort is incomparable.

3. File management

Downloading a document, renaming it, saving it in a folder, attaching it to an email: these operations are simple on a PC and often laborious on a tablet. If your relative needs to manage administrative documents regularly, a PC is more suitable.

4. Printing

Connecting a printer to a PC is simple: a USB cable and it works. On a tablet, you need a Wi-Fi compatible printer and have to configure the wireless connection. The difference is notable for seniors who print often.

5. Software compatibility

A Windows PC can install any software: tax software, an accounting spreadsheet, genealogy software, the banking programme. A tablet is limited to store applications (App Store or Play Store), which do not cover all needs.

The disadvantages of each option

Disadvantages of a tablet

  • Tedious text input without an external keyboard (additional cost of 20 to 100 euros)
  • Limited file management: attaching a document to an email can be confusing
  • Smaller screen: uncomfortable for reading long documents
  • Complicated printing with older printers
  • Limited storage on entry-level models (64 GB)

Disadvantages of a laptop

  • Heavier and bulkier (minimum 1.3 kg)
  • Slower start-up (10 to 30 seconds depending on the model)
  • Intrusive updates under Windows (forced restarts)
  • Virus risks requiring antivirus software
  • Less intuitive interface: mouse, menus, submenus, right-click…
  • Lower battery life (5 to 8 hours for entry-level models)

The decision tree: ask yourself these 5 questions

Answer these questions in order. The first answer that matches your situation will guide you to the right choice.

Question 1: What will the device mainly be used for?

  • Video calls, photos, videos, simple games, web browsing -> Tablet
  • Long emails, correspondence, administrative documents, spreadsheets -> Laptop
  • A bit of both -> Move on to the next question

Question 2: Has the person already used a computer?

  • Never or very rarely -> Tablet (faster learning curve)
  • Yes, they are comfortable with Windows -> Laptop (no change of habits)
  • They have an iPhone -> iPad (same logic, same Apple account)

Question 3: Do they need to print regularly?

  • Yes, often -> Laptop
  • Rarely or never -> Tablet

Question 4: Is weight an important criterion?

  • Yes (joint problems, frequent moves) -> Tablet
  • No -> Laptop

Question 5: What is the budget?

  • Less than 300 euros -> Android tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ at 250 euros) or Chromebook (Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 at 280 euros)
  • 300 to 450 euros -> iPad 10th generation (399 euros) or Windows PC (Acer Aspire Go 15 at 399 euros)
  • More than 450 euros -> iPad with keyboard or a more powerful PC

The third option: the Chromebook

If you are torn between a tablet and a PC, the Chromebook deserves your attention. It is a laptop that runs Chrome OS, the Google system. It combines the physical keyboard and large screen of a PC with the simplicity and security of a tablet.

A Chromebook boots in 5 seconds, cannot catch Windows viruses, and updates itself without ever disturbing you. Its price starts at 280 euros (Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook).

The limitation: it cannot run Windows software and requires a Wi-Fi connection for most tasks.

Hybrid solutions

Tablet with external keyboard

Adding a Bluetooth keyboard to a tablet (20 to 100 euros) combines the best of both worlds. The tablet remains light and touchscreen for browsing, and the keyboard provides typing comfort for emails. The combination weighs less than one kilogram.

Recommended models: Logitech K380 (around 39 euros, compatible with Android and iPad), Apple Magic Keyboard Folio (around 259 euros for iPad).

Laptop with touchscreen

Some Windows laptops offer a touchscreen, allowing you to use your finger as on a tablet. It is an appealing option on paper, but in practice, Windows is not optimised for touch use and the experience remains inferior to that of a real tablet.

Practical tips for a good start

Whatever your choice, here are four tips that will make the learning process easier.

1. Set up the device before giving it as a gift. Create the Google or Apple account, connect the Wi-Fi, install essential applications (WhatsApp, email, browser) and increase the text size.

2. Add visual cues. A small sticker on the power button, a note with the steps to open email: these simple aids save weeks of learning.

3. Start with a single use. Do not present all the features on the first day. Begin with one use (for example video calls), master it, then gradually add others.

4. Ensure nearby support. The trusted person who can troubleshoot by phone or in person is the number one success factor, more important than the choice of device itself (source: France Silver Eco report, 2025).
