Have you heard people talking about Netflix, Disney+ or streaming without really understanding what it is? You are not alone. Many seniors hesitate to get started because the vocabulary feels technical and the offers seem complicated.
In reality, it is simpler than it appears. Streaming simply means watching films, series or documentaries over the internet, whenever you want, with no set schedule. No more waiting until 8.50 pm for your programme: you choose what you watch and when.
This guide walks you through the offers step by step, helps you choose the one that suits you, and shows you how to subscribe without difficulty.
What exactly is streaming?
The word “streaming” means a continuous flow. In practice, instead of buying a DVD or recording a programme, you watch the content directly over the internet. It is like television, but you choose the programme.
What you need to get started
You need two things:
An internet connection. If you have a home internet box (whether with BT, Sky, Virgin or similar), that is sufficient. Streaming also works on 4G/5G on a smartphone or tablet, but watch your data consumption.
A connected screen. This can be your television (if it is connected to the internet, it is called a “Smart TV”), your tablet, your computer or your smartphone. Most televisions sold since 2018 are Smart TVs.
If your television is not connected, do not worry. A small device such as the Amazon Fire TV Stick (around €45) or the Xiaomi TV Stick (around €40) plugs into the HDMI socket on your television and turns it into a Smart TV. This is the simplest and cheapest solution.
The four services to know about
france.tv: the free option not to overlook
Many people do not know it, but france.tv offers a completely free streaming service. It is the catch-up (replay) service for the French public channels: France 2, France 3, France 5, and even exclusive programmes.
What you will find: programmes you missed on television (available to watch again for 7 to 30 days after broadcast), a large number of documentaries (nature, history, society), French and European films, and French series.
The price: free. You need to create an account with an email address, but no payment is required. There are adverts, but they are short (around 30 seconds before each programme).
Ease of use: good. The interface is in French, the categories are clear. A search function allows you to find a programme by name.
This service is particularly suited if you enjoy French programmes, documentaries and France Televisions content. It is also an excellent starting point for discovering streaming without paying anything.
Less suited for fans of recent American films or major international series such as original productions from the paid platforms.
Gerard, 74, shares his experience on the Seniors Connected forum in January 2026: “I started with france.tv because it’s free. I find my favourite documentaries and I no longer have to stay up late to watch the evening film.”
Netflix: the most popular
Netflix is the world’s best-known streaming service, with more than 10 million subscribers in France according to estimates published by Les Echos in 2025. Its catalogue is vast and varied.
What you will find: thousands of films and series across all genres, quality documentaries (nature, true crime, history), programmes in French and in original version with subtitles, original Netflix productions (exclusive series).
Prices (as of March 2026):
- Standard with ads: €5.99 per month. You watch on one screen with short adverts. Picture quality is Full HD (very good).
- Standard: €13.49 per month. Two simultaneous screens, no adverts, Full HD quality.
- Premium: €19.99 per month. Four simultaneous screens, no adverts, 4K Ultra HD quality.
Our advice: for a senior on their own, the Standard with ads plan at €5.99 is more than sufficient. The adverts are short and infrequent. Full HD quality is excellent on a standard television.
Ease of use: excellent. Netflix is recognised for its intuitive interface. When you open the app, personalised suggestions appear based on what you have watched. Text size is reasonable and buttons are large.
The limit to know before subscribing: the catalogue changes regularly. A film available this month may disappear next month. Broadcast rights are negotiated country by country and have a limited duration.
Disney+: for documentaries and classics
Disney+ is often seen as a service for children, but it offers much more than cartoons.
What you will find: the great Disney classics (to watch with the grandchildren), National Geographic documentaries (nature, science, exploration), Star Wars and Marvel films, and above all the “Star” catalogue which includes films and series for adults (thrillers, dramas, comedies).
Prices (as of March 2026):
- Standard with ads: €5.99 per month. Two simultaneous screens, short adverts.
- Standard: €8.99 per month. Two screens, no adverts.
- Premium: €13.99 per month. Four screens, 4K quality, no adverts.
Ease of use: good, but the interface is slightly less intuitive than Netflix. Content is organised by “universe” (Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, Star) which can be a little confusing at first.
This service is particularly suited if you enjoy nature and science documentaries (National Geographic), if you often watch television with your grandchildren, or if you appreciate classic cinema.
Amazon Prime Video: the good value option
Amazon Prime Video is included in the Amazon Prime subscription (€6.99 per month or €69.99 per year). If you already shop on Amazon, you may already have access to Prime Video without realising it.
What you will find: a varied catalogue of films and series, Amazon original productions, recent films, and the option to rent or buy very recent films (at an extra cost, €2.99 to €4.99 per film).
The price: €6.99 per month (or €69.99 per year, which works out at €5.83 per month). This price also includes free delivery on Amazon, Amazon Music (music streaming) and Amazon Photos (unlimited photo storage).
Ease of use: reasonable, but the interface mixes content included in the subscription with content available at extra cost. This can cause confusion. Always check that the film you are about to start is marked “Included with Prime” before clicking.
Monique, 69, a Prime Video customer since 2024, notes on the Senior Planet forum: “I appreciate the catalogue, but at first I accidentally rented a film for €3.99 without realising. Now I pay attention to the little ‘Included with Prime’ badge.”

How to subscribe: step-by-step guide
Subscribing to Netflix
On your tablet or computer:
- Open your internet browser (Safari, Chrome or Firefox).
- Type netflix.com in the address bar at the top of the screen.
- Click the red “Sign Up” or “Get Started” button.
- Choose your plan (we recommend “Standard with ads” at €5.99 to start).
- Create your account by entering your email address and choosing a password.
- Enter your payment details (bank card). Your card will be charged each month.
- You are subscribed. You can immediately start watching.
On your connected television:
- Find the Netflix app on your television (it is often pre-installed).
- Open the app and select “Sign Up”.
- Follow the same steps as above. Typing on the remote control is slower, so you can also create your account on a tablet or computer, then sign in on the television.
Practical tip: ask a relative to help you with the first sign-up. Once the account is created, everyday use is very straightforward.
Subscribing to Disney+
The process is very similar to Netflix:
- Go to disneyplus.com in your browser.
- Click “Subscribe”.
- Choose your plan.
- Create your account and enter your payment details.
Subscribing to Amazon Prime Video
- Go to primevideo.com in your browser.
- Click “Start your free trial” (30 days free).
- If you already have an Amazon account, sign in with it. If not, create one.
- Enter your payment details.
- After the 30 free days, the €6.99 per month subscription starts automatically. Remember to cancel before if you do not wish to continue.
Creating a france.tv account
- Go to france.tv in your browser.
- Click “Create an account” (usually in the top right corner).
- Enter your email address, choose a password and provide your date of birth.
- Confirm your registration by clicking the link received by email.
- That is it. No payment is needed.
Practical tips for enjoying streaming
Improving visual comfort
Enable subtitles. On Netflix and Disney+, you can enable French subtitles even for French-language programmes. This is useful if you have hearing difficulties. On Netflix, during playback, click the speech bubble icon at the bottom of the screen to access subtitles.
Increase subtitle size. On Netflix, go to your profile, then “Subtitle appearance”. You can choose a larger size and a contrasting background for better readability.
Adjust brightness. If you are watching in a dark room, lower the brightness of your screen to avoid eye strain. On a tablet, the setting is found in the display settings.
Finding programmes you enjoy
Use voice search. On a Smart TV or a Fire TV Stick, you can often say the name of a film or actor into the remote control instead of typing. It is much faster.
Create a list. On Netflix, click the ”+” next to a film or series to add it to “My List”. You can easily find programmes you want to watch later.
Explore the categories. Services offer categories such as “Documentaries”, “Comedies” or “Based on a true story” that make discovering new content easier.
Avoiding unexpected charges
Check that content is included. On Amazon Prime Video, only content marked “Included with Prime” is free. Everything else is for rental or purchase.
Set a reminder for the free trial. If you activate a free trial (30 days on Amazon Prime), note the end date in your diary. If you do not wish to continue, cancel before that date to avoid being charged.
One service is often enough. You do not need to subscribe to all services. Start with france.tv (free) and one paid service. You can always switch later.
Danielle, 76, shares on the Seniors and Technology Facebook group in February 2026: “I started with france.tv for the documentaries, then I took Netflix at €5.99. Honestly, between the two, I have more programmes than I can watch.”
What we recommend based on your profile
You want to discover streaming without paying: start with france.tv. It is free, in French, and the documentary and catch-up catalogue is extensive.
You enjoy varied series and films: Netflix Standard with ads at €5.99 per month offers the best catalogue and the simplest interface.
You often watch with your grandchildren: Disney+ Standard with ads at €5.99 per month combines Disney classics for the children and National Geographic documentaries for you.
You already shop on Amazon: check whether you have Amazon Prime. If so, you may already have access to Prime Video at no extra cost.
You want the best value: france.tv (free) + Netflix Standard with ads (€5.99) = a budget of €5.99 per month for a very comprehensive catalogue.
